  • Can Acupuncture Cause Nerve Damage? Debunking Myths

Last Updated on April 13, 2026 by Ryoko Takayama

If you’re considering acupuncture for the first time, you probably have questions about safety. Can needles cause nerve damage? Will I catch an infection? Is acupuncture really safe, or are there hidden risks? These are legitimate questions, and I’m glad you’re asking them. After 25+ years and thousands of treatments, I can tell you that acupuncture is remarkably safe when performed by a licensed, trained practitioner. Let me address the myths, explain the real risks (which are minimal), and help you understand what makes acupuncture such a trusted healing modality.

The Myth: Acupuncture Causes Nerve Damage

This is the question I hear most often, and I understand the concern. After all, WHO benchmarks for acupuncture practice. But the reality is quite different from the fear.

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine. They’re about the diameter of a human hair—much thinner than hypodermic needles used for injections or blood draws. This thinness means minimal tissue trauma.

Comprehensive 2024 safety review extensively – A licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac.) completes at minimum 1,500-3,000 hours of training, including detailed study of anatomical structures, vital organs, and exactly where nerves and blood vessels are located. We know precisely where to place needles and where to avoid.

Nerve damage from acupuncture is extraordinarily rare. In 25+ years of practice with thousands of patients, I have never caused nerve damage. The incidence in published literature is less than 1 in 10,000 treatments. Acupuncture is statistically safer than many common medical procedures.

Temporary paresthesia (tingling or unusual sensation) occasionally occurs during treatment if a needle contacts a nerve fiber, but this resolves immediately when the needle is withdrawn. This is not nerve damage.

The Myth: Acupuncture Spreads Infection or Disease

NCCIH safety information, sterile, disposable needles. Every professional acupuncturist uses sterile technique and follows infection control protocols rigorous as those in medical offices.

In my Irvine clinic:

  • I use only pre-sterilized, individually packaged, single-use needles
  • My hands are washed before every patient
  • Treatment areas are cleaned with antiseptic before needling
  • All used needles are disposed of in proper biohazard containers
  • My treatment room is cleaned and sanitized after every patient

The risk of infection from acupuncture is extremely low—far lower than risk from injections, surgery, or dental work. There has never been a case of HIV transmission through acupuncture in the United States.

The Myth: Acupuncture Has Dangerous Side Effects

Side effects from acupuncture are rare and mild. The most common include:

  • Slight soreness or bruising at needle sites (rare and resolves in days)
  • Temporary lightheadedness (easily prevented by eating before treatment)
  • Mild nausea (uncommon and manageable with preparation)
  • Emotional release or tiredness (signs your body is healing, not dangers)

Serious adverse events from acupuncture are extraordinarily rare. In contrast, side effects from common medications—even over-the-counter pain relievers—are far more frequent and often more severe.

Real Safety Considerations and Precautions

While acupuncture is exceptionally safe, certain precautions do matter:

Practitioner Qualifications: See a licensed acupuncturist. Licensing requirements vary by state, but in California, licensed acupuncturists must complete supervised training and pass rigorous exams. This ensures competence and accountability.

Sterile Needles: Verify that your acupuncturist uses single-use, sterile needles—never reused needles or needles sterilized in office. This is non-negotiable for safety.

Medical Transparency: Always inform your acupuncturist about medications, supplements, bleeding disorders, or pregnancy. While acupuncture is safe during pregnancy and with most medications, modifications may be needed.

Pre-Existing Conditions: Certain conditions require modified treatment. Fear of needles, severe blood clotting disorders, or pacemakers need to be discussed beforehand.

Realistic Expectations: Acupuncture is effective, but it’s not a cure-all. Some conditions respond quickly; others take time. Your acupuncturist should give you honest assessment of what’s realistic for your situation.

How Family Wellness Acupuncture Prioritizes Your Safety

Safety is foundational to my practice:

Qualifications: I’m a licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac.) with 25+ years of clinical experience and a Master’s degree in acupuncture and Oriental medicine. I maintain continuing education and stay current with safety protocols.

Sterilization Standards: I use only FDA-approved, pre-sterilized, single-use, sterile needles. Every needle comes in an individual sterile package that I open in front of you.

Infection Control: My clinic follows OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards and maintains meticulous sanitation. Used needles are disposed of in medical biohazard containers.

Thorough History Taking: During your first visit, I ask comprehensive questions about medications, supplements, health conditions, surgeries, and any special concerns. This information guides safe treatment planning.

Transparent Communication: I explain exactly what I’m doing, why, and what you might feel during treatment. You’re never surprised or uninformed about your care.

Conservative Treatment Plan: I start conservatively with new patients, assessing your body’s response before intensifying treatment. This prevents unexpected reactions.

Ongoing Monitoring: I assess how you respond to each session and adjust accordingly. If something isn’t working, we modify immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I’m nervous or have a fear of needles?

Many patients are needle-phobic initially. Let me know before your appointment so I can take extra time explaining what to expect. Acupuncture needles don’t feel like injection needles—they’re much thinner and insertion is usually painless. Most needle-phobic people feel relieved during their first treatment.

Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?

Yes. Acupuncture is safe and beneficial during pregnancy when the practitioner is trained in pregnancy acupuncture and avoids certain points. Always inform your acupuncturist immediately if you’re pregnant or might be.

Can acupuncture be done if I’m on blood thinners?

Yes, with modified technique. Blood thinners increase bruising risk, but don’t prevent treatment. Always inform your acupuncturist of all medications before treatment.

What if I have a pacemaker or implanted device?

Certain electrical implants require avoidance of electroacupuncture (electrical stimulation applied to needles). Needle acupuncture alone is usually safe, but always inform your acupuncturist of implants beforehand so we can plan appropriately.
